To my Artist internet/messageboard/blogger Friends...

I'm going to sketch on my wall. I can't stand it anymore. See this wall?

Just pale yellow paint and some coathooks. It's begging to be filled with chaotic and unrelated images, no? It's seriously bothering me.

So.. how do I do this so the sketches LOOK like sketches and can still withstand washing of fingerprints and crayon? Is it possible to paint something and have it still look like a charcoal sketch? I considered spray lacquer, but I don't want it to be shiny.

Any ideas?

Sweety, I don't have any ideas of charcoal paintig, but if you can't figure it out, you could use pencils to do you out line and paint in you master piece. I know I wasn't much help. Don't give up! I even googled it because I thought it would be so neat. I love charcoal painting.

I would suggest doing your sketches and then going over them with a fine paint brush and some black gesso paint. It gives a durable matte finish and then you can top the whole thing with a layer of varnish. That would be my suggestion. I like the Bob Ross gesso, which is available at craft stores like Michael's. Let us know how it comes out. I use a foam brush when I use gesso.

What a fabulous idea! You can use flat interior house paint.

You could also let the kids paint it! We have so many hand prints on the wall going down the stairs I am thinking of giving the kids four colors of house paint and letting them hand print all the way down.

I helped my cousin paint her son's room in handprints. She did basic red, yellow, and blue, and laid trays of each color all around the floor. Everyone in the house, including her son, handprinted to our heart's content. It was so much fun and looked beautiful afterwards!

Dry brush painting will give you the charcoal sketch you are looking for. Dab your dry brush sparingly into the paint and then dab some off. Voila.

I can't wait to see what you decide and do!
